Betway Steps Up as Primary Sponsor of Cricket South Africa in a Three-Year Deal

In a significant development amid the ongoing global health crisis, Betway has inked a three-year agreement with Cricket South Africa (CSA), becoming the primary backer of the national squad.

This injection of funds provides a substantial lift for South African cricket, which faced uncertainty after former sponsor, Standard Bank, severed ties following accusations of misconduct against ex-chief executive Thabang Moroe.

The agreement expands Betway’s current involvement with CSA, as they already held the title sponsorship of the well-regarded Mzansi Super League.

“Our belief in CSA and dedication to cricket in South Africa remained steadfast,” stated Betway’s David Rachidi, emphasizing the significance of the collaboration during this period of instability within the sporting world.

Although the precise date for the Proteas’ return to competition is still unknown, this financial commitment offers much-needed security and a beacon of optimism for the years ahead.

Encountering a challenging financial landscape and marketing budget reductions, a prominent financial institution has ceased its financial backing of Cricket South Africa (CSA). This withdrawal represents a substantial setback for the organization, projected to result in an estimated annual loss of 100 million Rand over the ensuing four years.

Despite this obstacle, CSA’s present administration is resolute in addressing these difficulties. Interim CEO Jacques Faul emphasized their approaches during a legislative assembly briefing, encompassing securing fresh sponsorship agreements, optimizing the South African team’s game calendar, and utilizing an anticipated surplus of 50 to 80 million Rand from the 2019/20 financial period. These endeavors intend to enhance public opinion of the sport, which has been adversely affected since the financial institution’s withdrawal last December.

Faul acknowledged the complexities, noting that sponsorship arrangements have dwindled globally, and market predictability is limited. Nevertheless, he disclosed that CSA has secured a substantial pact with a global sponsor, providing some respite.

Betway CEO Anthony Werkman conveyed enthusiasm regarding the collaboration, underscoring their dedication to cricket through their varied sports holdings. With the South African team poised to resume international competition later this year, Werkman expressed eagerness to witness their performance across all game formats.
